Pool Chemical Calculator

Estimate pool volume and common chemical adjustments from your water-test readings.

Pool and test results

Use the volume helper below if unknown.

Pool volume helper

For a rectangular pool: length × width × average depth × 7.48 gives approximate gallons. For a round pool: diameter × diameter × average depth × 5.9. Irregular pools should be divided into smaller shapes.

How the chlorine estimate works

One gallon of 10% liquid chlorine raises free chlorine by about 10 ppm in 10,000 gallons. The calculator scales that relationship for your pool size, concentration and target increase.

Balance in a sensible order

Test with a dependable kit. Address urgent sanitation first, then work toward appropriate pH and alkalinity. Recommended targets depend on sanitizer system, stabilizer level, surface and manufacturer guidance.

Why pH additions are shown as guidance

Acid demand depends on total alkalinity, borates, aeration and product strength. A simple pH reading cannot safely produce an exact acid dose, so the calculator advises small label-directed adjustments followed by retesting.

Frequently asked questions

Why does chlorine disappear quickly?

Sunlight, swimmers, debris, algae and low stabilizer can increase chlorine demand. Test again after circulation.

Can I use household bleach?

Plain, unscented bleach without additives can supply chlorine, but verify its sodium hypochlorite percentage and follow appropriate pool guidance.

Should I add acid and chlorine together?

No. Never mix chemicals or add them together in the same location. Follow label spacing and circulation instructions.
